Canada's Border Disorder: Nine Years of NDP-Liberal Failures
Plus, the NDP-Liberals allow a foreign-terror suspect to cross the border twice, the government's botched CEBA project, the NDP fail to stand up to the Liberals again, and another Christmas parade!
Canadians are legitimately concerned about the mounting issues at the Canada-U.S. border and within the Liberal broken immigration system, which is among the long list of things that have descended into chaos after nine years of this NDP-Liberal government. Along with the NDP-Liberal carbon tax and the unaffordability crisis, the border disorder and broken Liberal immigration system are among the issues I hear most from residents by email, over direct messages on social media and in meetings. The prime minister has generally either ignored the issues until they reached crisis levels or botched the administration of policies. Even the Liberal public safety minister said bolstering the government’s powers to address the border is “not a priority.”
An accumulation of policy errors and botched enforcement has seen Canada reach a record high of 260,000 unprocessed asylum claims, over 500,000 illegal residents in the country, a 2.4 million application backlog in immigration, and an over 630% increase in U.S. border control encounters with people illegally crossing from Canada. It has gotten so bad that the recently-elected U.S. President has demanded that Canada stop the illegal crossings and end the trafficking of fentanyl across the border or be hit with a 25 percent tariff on all Canadian goods. Such a threat is an economic imperative that should take precedence over other considerations in the departments affected.
I stood in Parliament on Tuesday to demand answers from the NDP-Liberal government about our country’s border security and the mounting immigration and refugee backlog. Instead of providing answers, the Liberal minister deflected with partisan attacks and made a flimsy case for why the government he is a part of should continue to oversee the border disorder they caused. I promptly reminded the minister that the issue was indeed about trust and offered up his record with facts freely available from the Liberal government’s own data.
Watch me confront the Liberal minister over the border disorder and the broken immigration system:
As a consequence of the NDP-Liberal’s disorder at the border, terrorists are crossing back and forth between Canada and the U.S., with no visible actions from this NDP-Liberal government. A foreign terror suspect crossed into Canada from the U.S. in 2017, claimed refugee status, his refugee claim was rejected, he then evaded deportation for seven years, and then crossed illegally into the U.S. before he was finally deported by U.S. authorities for his alleged ties to terrorism. The terror suspect should have never had a chance to cross into Canada or the U.S. as he should have either been deported long ago once his terrorist ties were discovered and when his refugee claim was rejected. The Canada Border Service Agency even confirmed that the accused individual was facing deportation from Canada, but the NDP-Liberal government was too slow in getting it done. It is no wonder why our closest ally and trading partner to the south is troubled by this government’s negligence.
After news broke this week of the terror suspect's arrest and deportation, I rose in Parliament to confront the NDP-Liberals that it was their broken policies that were responsible for the entire ordeal. I referred to how not getting their immigration levels right caused the border disorder. If they overshoot those targets and do not account for certain variables, such as bad actors taking advantage of our system, it can lead to chaos at the border — which is precisely what happened.
It’s unacceptable what happened, and Canadians deserve better. It’s time for a real plan, not excuses, to fix the border disorder.
Watch me confront the NDP-Liberal government over their botched immigration levels and border disorder:
The Auditor General (AG) found that approximately $3.5 billion in taxpayers’ money was paid to approximately 77,000 ineligible recipients. The AG also reported that the Liberal government did not provide effective oversight of the CEBA program and left important program elements unaddressed. The CEBA program was one of the business support programs that gave conditional and repayable loans of $40,000 during the pandemic to prevent business failures.
The Liberal government also poorly delivered the CEBA project's procurement process. A series of non-competitive contracts were awarded to Accenture, a foreign multinational consulting company, after the Liberals allowed them to lead the informal procurement process. This resulted in Accenture receiving $313 million — or 92 percent — of the total $342 million in contracts awarded to support the delivery of the CEBA program. Essentially, the Liberals allowed Accenture to decide how much they would pay themselves with taxpayers’ dollars. The AG further noted that because of the government’s use of Accenture proprietary systems, the ongoing delivery of the program will require the government to rely on these non-competitive contracts until 2028.
This isn’t the first time this year the AG has found this government responsible for wasting taxpayers’ dollars, as they were found responsible for botching the procurement process of the ArriveCAN project and the awarding of McKinsey contracts.
It is clear that this Prime Minister is not worth the cost as he has a complete disregard for the Canadian taxpayer. Only common sense Conservatives will fix the budget by putting a cap on spending, implementing a dollar-for-dollar rule, and firing the high-priced consultants that defraud taxpayers.
The NDP has now voted 24 times in lock-step with the Liberals to keep them in power, thus proving that the ripped-up coalition agreement continues to be alive and well. Considering that the NDP was seemingly afraid to stand up to the Liberal government, the Conservatives put forward a confidence motion using the NDP Leader’s words about how the Liberals have failed to stand up for working Canadians.
Predictably, the NDP once again refused to stand up for working Canadians and will not vote to have a carbon tax election when the confidence motion is up for a vote this coming Monday. I will be voting non-confidence in this NDP-Liberal coalition government.
Common sense Conservatives will keep fighting for a carbon tax election so we can axe the tax, build the homes, fix the budget and stop the crime.
I will be at the Mahogany Parade of Lights, spreading Christmas cheer on Saturday, December 7. This parade will bring the community together with a parade of festive floats and hot chocolate stations located along the parade route. The parade route will start and end at the corner of Mahogany Road SE and Marine Drive SE and will start at 5 pm. Stop by my hot chocolate station and let me serve you a cup of hot chocolate, hear your views and answer your questions. Remember to dress for the weather!
On immigration levels, we will introduce a formula to set numbers based on housing, healthcare and jobs capacity. On immigration visas, closer to the election we will release more details about what we are committing to do should we earn the right to govern. On border security, there is a fuller over 30 minute press conference with Pierre Poilievre offering details here: https://www.youtube.com/live/uOo-rOTEfas?si=8AT1yYcWtJHRp0TR. And lastly, the Liberals are indeed 100% responsible for the broken immigration system as they have been in power for 9 years and there is nobody else to be held accountable or responsible.
Dear Mr. Kmiec, Let us assume that the Liberal government is 100% responsible for all of the failures you describe. Let us also assume they are 100% incompetent. Now what are you going to do to fix the problem once you get into office, assuming you are to be the Minister in charge of Immigration ?
